Fort Hood is just outside of Killeen, TX and is a United States military post. It was named after Confederate General John Bell Hood. It is about halfway between Waco and Austin, approx. 60 miles from each. Fort Hood's main cantonment is a census-designated place with a total population of 33,711 in Bell County, Texas. Parts of the base are in Coryell County.

Fort Hood is one of the largest US military installations not only in the country, but in the world. It is the home of First Army Division West, III Corps, 13th Sustainment Command, 1st Cavalry Division, 41st Fires Brigade, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and many other corps and echelons above corps units.The 4th Infantry Division completed their move from Fort Hood to Fort Carson, Colorado when they exchanged positions with several units. One that was closed at Fort Hood was the 4th Infantry Division Museum on May 29, 2009 when it was moved to Colorado.

Fort Hood used to be billed as the largest military base in the free world before the breakup of the Soviet Union, although Ft Benning has more personnel but not more land. Fort Hood is a gated post with facilities that are open to the public like the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area and the 1st Cavalry Division Museum. Restricted access to the cantonments started on September 12, 2001. You can still get passes to visit the two museums on post and the lake is also open without restrictions to the public because it is outside the cantonments. The annual Independence Day celebration has a fireworks display which is one of the largest in the country and is open to the public.
